Where Do Poems Come From?

Rape Poem

Somewhere near the beginning of this poem, Marge says,
"There is no difference between being raped
And being bit on the ankle by a rattlesnake
Except that people ask if your skirt was short
And why you were out anyhow. "

She relates this to being bit by a snake because people normally don't question choices like why she was wearing what she wore or why she was out. Often, women are blamed for their own rape tragedies because of the choices they made but the truth is, women should be able to wear whatever they want without having to be questioned. Later on in the poem, she says,
"Rattling keys like a snake's warning",
which relates back to the first part as it compares to a snake.

"The Portrait" by Stanley Kunitz

This poem makes the father seem as though he is still alive. It shows that art and pictures are memories and never go away unless destroyed.

The way Langston Hughs describes his poem takes us through his mindset and gave context around where the poem came from. Poems happen randomly and out of nowhere. It is not hard to find poetry around us because it is everywhere.
